Recommendation 8  (Support)

That the Federation call upon the provincial government to demonstrate meaningful implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by:

1. adopting a funded plan of action that ensures all school districts are providing all employees with comprehensive in-service that fully addresses all aspects of Call to Action #57 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

2. adopting the long-held recommendation of the BCTF, FNESC, BCSTA, and other organizations for the graduation requirements to include at least one First Peoples course at the secondary school level for all students.

3. ensuring school districts provide all teachers with the necessary teaching resources in keeping with the Indigenous content embedded in the revised curriculum, and relevant to the worldviews and knowledges of local First Nations communities.

4. implementing a plan of action to ensure that Indigenous languages are taught in all school districts, and easily accessed by students. 5. working with the BCTF, the BC Teachers’ Council, and other organizations and bodies to significantly increase the number of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit teachers working in BC schools.

6. working with the BCTF and other organizations to implement a plan of action to address racism experienced by staff, students, and families in BC schools.

7. abandoning colonial narratives in education promoted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and discontinuing the utilization of colonial tools such as the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) and the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA).

These are all positive steps.  I would hope they are more willing to listen to teachers on education issues.

Resolution 104 (Support)

That the Federation continue to support the provincial government to:

  • enact and fully implement The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous

Peoples.

  • support honouring Indigenous rights and title and requiring that decisions and projects

affecting Indigenous people gain free, prior, and informed consent.

I don't know exactly what this will look like, but I agree with setting out sights in the right direction.

Resolution 105 (Likely Support)

That the BCTF investigate how the new prevalence model will impact Aboriginal students and if it will be in line with British Columbia's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

Not sure if this will be moved as the model is currently 'shelved.'  That doesn't mean it is really gone though.

I am not sure of the efficacy of the cost of an investigation of an unknown model.''
