Resolution 176.  (Likely Support)   

That the BCTF lobby the federal government to eliminate interest on present and future federal student loans.

I'm not in opposition; however, if the interest is eliminated, the federal government pays the interest.   Since we make this statement publicly, it would signal it is really important to us.  Is it more important than making sure that there is fresh drinking water for every community in Canada.  We know that Reserves are the most common community without fresh drinking water.

This doesn't have to be an either or; however, we need to consider that every ask has to be put in a government priority list.  At some point the funds run out (or get directed to other priorities.)

 

I would want drinking water for a lifetime to be higher on the list than interest free loans for the roughly 20% of students privileged to be in university.
